Ethel Mae Hayes, 93, of Hobbs, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015 in Lubbock, TX. A Celebration of a Life Lived will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Little Zion Baptist Church with Pastor Winfred Gipson, officiating. Interment will follow in Prairie Haven Memorial Park. Visitation will be 1:00-7:00 PM, Friday the 30th with the family receiving friends from 5:00-7:00 PM at Griffin Funeral Home.

Ethel, better known as "Auntie" and "Grandma", was born to John and Crowell Phillips in Fairfield, Texas. In her teenage years she met her true love, H. J. Hayes, whom she married and they celebrated over 54 wonderful years of marriage until his death in 1997. They lived in Buffalo, TX several years then relocated to Crossroads, NM where they both worked for the Sawyer's ranch for 15 plus years.

After retiring they moved to Hobbs, NM. Ethel was a wonderful seamstress, making her clothes and hats to match. She always made a fashion statement with her matching outfits and jewelry. Ethel loved to cook and was always canning vegetables and fruits. She was a devoted member of Little Zion Baptist Church and served faithfully as a choir member and an announcement clerk. Ethel was a devoted foster parent to Richard Carr and Prentis Reed. She also raised Prentis's son, Richard, who was the apple of her eye, the love of her life. Ethel was also preceded in death by her parents, 1 sister, 5 brothers, foster son, Richard Carr and her awesome uncle, George Mosley.

Her favorite song was "If it had not been for the Lord on my side" and her favorite expression was, "I Know So Well!"

Those who will cherish her memories the most include her nieces, Marie Hammond, (Joe) of Abilene, TX, Gabrella Thomas of Abilene, TX, Bessie Mosley of Hobbs; nephews, Kenneth Johnson of Desoto, TX, Glendel Johnson of Lancaster, TX; the apple of her eye, grandson, Richard Reed of Hobbs; foster son, Prentis Reed of Waco, TX; a host of great nieces, great nephews and special friends, Willean Smith, Mabel Smith, Katherine Clay and Mae Dene Evans.

Serving as active pallbearers are: Tyler Johnson, Tre Washington, Jeremy Jones, Chris Pellissier, Justin Millsap and Kevin Mosley. Honorary pallbearers are: James R. Billington, Larry Mosley, William Mosley and Charles Mosley.

Services are under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.
