Leonor “Lena” Martinez of Hobbs, New Mexico was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother during her incredible 83 years of life. She passed away surrounded by her loved ones on Tuesday afternoon, February 4th, 2025.
Lena was born on April 11th, 1941, to father Guadalupe Galindo and mother Hilaria Peña in Ojinaga, Chihuahua Mexico. She lived in Loving, New Mexico during her childhood raised by her uncles and sisters. In her early adulthood, Lena moved to Hobbs, New Mexico where she met and married her husband Moises Martinez on July 22nd, 1960, and lived happily ever after raising a beautiful family together. She dedicated her life’s work and retired from Hobbs Municipal Schools after 35 years of service.
Leonor is the matriarch of a large and loving family with a total of 4 children, 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Her love spread even wider across nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. Lena was also a cherished friend to many and an adored acquaintance to many more.
Lena was predeceased by her husband Moises Martinez and her sister Margarita Gomez. She is survived by her sister Lupita Lujan and children Fabian Martinez, Maria Martinez (Daughter-in-law), Naomi Ramirez, Erasmo Ramirez (Son-in-law) Sonya Martinez, Michelle Cortez, and Anthony Cortez (Son-in-law). She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren - Crystal Martinez, Eliza Lagod, Elias Ramirez, Cori Jacobo, Eric Ramirez, Phillip Martinez, Zachary Cortez, Zurrie Uribe, Nicole Ramirez, Isaiah Martinez, Selena Sample, and Armando Sample.
Lena had a vibrant, kind and generous spirit and a strong dedication to God. She was a devout Catholic who attended St. Helena Catholic Church. Her favorite pastimes included gardening, watching the news, traveling, spending time with her loved ones and friends, and drinking Dr. Pepper. She was a fierce protector of her family and an advocate for love and forgiveness. Most memorable were her humble life expressions - “That’s life, what can you do” and “Si dios quiere” - that symbolize the importance gratitude played in her life. Lena’s life journey is a testament to her strength, resilience and unwavering faith and a true inspiration to all who were blessed to have known or been loved by her.
