Thomas Leo Gerend, of Hobbs, passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2016. He was 62.
Tom or Tommy to his family and friends, was born on September 9, 1953, in Koblenz, Germany. He spent the years of his childhood and young adulthood in Northern Minnesota, where he enjoyed Boy Scout campouts in the frigid winters and spent summers on the banks of Crane Lake swimming, fishing, and exploring the woods with his brother Pete and sisters Anne and Mary. A natural athlete, he was a wrestling standout. He attended Moorehead State University.
Tom moved to Hobbs in 1977 in his prized Chevrolet Camaro. He worked for many years as a master carpenter in housing construction in the Hobbs area and was known for his precision and his attention to detail. He was a gifted and knowledgeable woodworker, and made many beautiful gifts for family and friends that will be cherished. Known for his quick wit, good-natured teasing, his laughter, and his smile, Tom was generous to those he loved. He will be remembered for his kindness, patience and ability to listen and will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Theresa Gerend, and his nephew, Daniel Austin. He is survived by his father, Dr. Thomas Gerend, of Las Cruces, his brother, Peter (Debra) Gerend, of Midland, his sisters, Anne (Jay) Parks, of Albuquerque, and Mary (Dan) Austin, of Ruidoso, his nieces and nephews Justin Parks, Catherine Zimmerman, Joseph Parks, Nicholas Gerend, and Thomas Austin and friends including Skip Connolly, of Hobbs and beloved dog Sandy.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, February 29, 2016 at St. Helena Catholic Church with Reverend Ricardo Bauzá as Celebrant. Inurnment will follow in Prairie Haven Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.
