Thurman Brooks

Thurman Darnell Brooks, 48, of Hobbs, NM, died unexpectedly, on October 18, 2021, after a recent kidney transplant. The family is deeply saddened by his sudden death. He was born on September 26, 1973.    He had attended Hobbs Schools and was a 1992 graduate of Hobbs High School. He had lived in Hobbs most of his life, except for several years of residing in Albuquerque, NM.

Anyone who knew Thurman was touched by his compassionate nature, humor, and mild temperament. He was a peacemaker and was always a source of positivity.

Thurman was also a strong, kind, loving and supportive father to his four children. He made sure they knew he loved them, and he spoke daily to each of them regardless of where they were. He was their biggest cheerleader.

His best friend was his father, Bobby Brooks, Sr., who was more like a twin brother. Together they had adventures, travels, and a shared loved that could fill a volume of books.

His passion and integrity to those he loved was unwavering. He leaves a huge hole in the hearts of his family and friends, who were always entertained by his stories and hilarious sense of humor. He was the life at any gathering. Despite his life health struggles, Thurman attempted to work when he wasn’t sick, and had been employed at Lowe’s, Dairy Queen and Lea County Correctional Facility.

He was a Christian and a faithful member of Word of Life Christian Fellowship until his health began failing.

Not only will Thurman be remembered as a fantastic father, but a great life partner, and a best friend to many. No matter life circumstance, you'd always depart with a story of something funny/crazy he had said, or he had done while you were with him. He was a food epicurean and connoisseur and would whip up mouthwatering recipes with an extra kick or twist to the food item(s). He loved to barbecue and was a master, creating his own secret sauce.

He loved people and was a conversation starter who would usually begin a dialogue by saying, “How ‘bout ‘dem cowboys? That’s because he was a huge football fan of the Dallas Cowboys. His infectious smile and laugh will live on forever.

Thurman is now at peace, joining his mother, Irene Brooks; including two uncles he was named after; his grandparents, Frank and Rhoda Brooks and Rev. Harrison and Johnnie Mae Watkins; other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and loved ones.

He is survived by his father, Bobby Brooks, Sr., two sons, Tavion Brooks (Jazmine Hernandez) of Hobbs and T.J. Brooks, of the home; two daughters, Thurmina Brooks of Albuquerque and Evelyn Brooks of Houston, TX., a foster son, Christian Brooks of the home; a foster daughter, Elizabeth Brooks; a brother, Bobby Brooks, II; a sister, Angela Brooks of Hobbs; a longtime companion and partner, Felicia Mallory of Hobbs; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as his extended family (the Brooks and the Watkins Clan) and an abundance of friends. We will all miss him more than words can ever express.

There will be a public viewing of his body on Thursday, Nov. 4 at Griffin Funeral Home. Family will greet friends and relatives from 5 to 7 p.m. The Celebration of Life will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church., 1222 E. Midwest St., in Hobbs on Friday, November 5 at 11 a.m.
