Vernon Mackey Sr.

Vernon Mackey Sr. was born in Whitehouse TX to Ruben Mackey Sr. and Octavia Pettigrew Mackey on May 14, 1930. He was the fifth of seventeen children. God called him home on December 12, 2018, where he is now walking on streets of gold. He is in the grandstands now and is cheering for us all!
He accepted Christ as a very young man while fishing on Chambers Creek and would later share his conversion story with many. He served faithfully as a Deacon at Pentecostal Temple COGIC until he felt the call of God into the ministry. In answer to this calling he and wife Rosa pioneered Christ Holy Temple Church in 1983. The Mackey's served faithfully side by side ministering to many until Rosa was called home to be with the Lord on August 24, 2014. Pastor Mackey continued to serve until his health failed and he was no longer able to do so. But even from the nursing home he continued to tell others of his commitment to Christ.
In his early career he worked for a local bakery and for many years would make the most beautiful cakes for family on holidays. In later years he was a self-employed entrepreneur and loved working his farm which consisted of vegetables, pecan trees and raising hogs. He passed on his hard-working ethics to his children.
Some of those who look forward to seeing him again and hold cherished his memories of him are: Sons: Vernard Mackey Sr. (Deborah) of Mesquite TX, Jerry Mackey Sr. (Maxine) of Chula Vista CA, Arthur Mackey (Retta) of Hobbs NM and Vernon Mackey Jr. (Karen) of Hobbs NM, and Daughter Alice Mackey Benford of Hobbs NM, 17 Grandchildren and 24 Great grandchildren.
Brothers: Levi Mackey Sr. of Hobbs NM and Dr. Jesse James Mackey (Frankie) of Coppell TX.
Sisters: Verlene Brooks (Ben) of Hobbs NM, and Ruby Jewel Johnson of Denver CO.
He was proceeded in death by parents Ruben Mackey Sr. and Octavia Pettigrew Mackey, His Loving Wife Rosa, daughter, Lula Obanion, great grandson Devan Ray Mackey and brothers Ruben Mackey Jr., Joe Mackey, Ross Lee Mackey Sr., Lorenzo Mackey Sr., and Jesse Lee Mackey, and sisters Frances Owens, Ocie Pettie, Venora Basquez, Millie Mackey, and Elizabeth Mackey
Homegoing Celebrations will be on Friday, December 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Holy Temple Church located at 2006 E White Street. A wake will be held on Thursday from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Services are under the care of Griffin Funeral Home.
