Willie George Ray, age 98, died on Friday March 23, 2018, at home with her loving and devoted son by her side. "Billie" was born on May 21, 1920 in Corsicana, Texas to Lilah and William G. Pope. Billie married Eustice "Mutt" Ray in 1939 and in 1941 they had their only son, Donald C. Ray. In 1949, they moved to Hobbs, New Mexico where she was actively involved in the community.
While in Hobbs, Billie was a longstanding member of Northside Baptist Church and the Rebekah Lodge. She was City Treasurer for 28 years before retiring in 1985. After the death of her husband in 1995, she moved to Wichita Falls, Texas to be closer to her family. While in Wichita Falls Billie again immersed herself in her community volunteering for Meals on Wheels, Adopt a Block, Food Pantry and the Puppet Ministry.
Billie spent hours every day in her garden and her love for nature continued throughout her life. She loved her animals and had many special pets including cats, dogs and even Chester, the parrot. Billie enjoyed reading, traveling and Bible Study. She was a faithful and valued member of Lamar Baptist Church and used her gardening expertise to keep the church grounds beautiful year-round.
In 2012 Billie moved to Buda, Texas with her son and daughter-in-law, Sue, where she enjoyed drives through the hill country, listening to music and spending time with her family who brought her tremendous happiness.
Along with Donald and Sue Ray, Billie is survived by her grand-daughters Donna Ray and Gerry Ray, her step-grandchildren Sheryl Andarakes, Kristy Faus and Bart Moore, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Billie was a strong and remarkable woman who above all else loved God and her family, her son being her ultimate joy.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday March 28, 2018 in Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Reverend Greg Kennedy, officiating.
